We’re saddened to hear that Derek Brightman (who held BASI Membership number 1) has sadly passed away.

Derek was one of the last remaining founding members of BASI, and BASI would not be here today without his contributions. As one of the first BASI trainers, he served on the training body for many years.

Derek also started the Glenshee Ski School back in 1964 and helped shape the future of Scottish skiing, so his contribution to the industry goes beyond BASI alone.

Countless members have reached out expressing how inspiring and influential Derek was to them throughout their careers. The office staff also fondly recall the regular and friendly visits from Derek. It is truly the end of an era and he’ll be greatly missed by everyone here at BASI.

Derek’s funeral will be held at Inverness Crematorium at 11am on Thursday the 6th of October and the family would like to welcome friends of Derek to attend. The family have also requested no flowers at the funeral, instead, there will be an opportunity to donate to Marie Curie whose work with Derek has been incredible.
